This is a stand-alone story that fits just about anywhere in the Voyage timeline. This story was actually inspired by the song “For My lady,” by the Moody Blues.

My Lady

I'll never forget the first time I saw her. Elegant and graceful, she made all the others look cheap and clumsy. I've never met another like her. She's one of a kind and almost an obsession for me. She calms me and soothes me like no one else. I crave her touch like a drowning man craves air. I'm not sure where I would be without her.

There are times when I have to leave her, for stretches longer than I care to admit. She always calls me back. I think she's the reason I keep coming back from these insane assignments when another man might give up. She calls to me like no other ever has, seductive and mysterious. She's my reward for a job well done, my reason for living.

She makes me feel real and alive, like what I do makes a difference. Some people have questioned our relationship, unable to understand what I see in her. The admiral understands. I think he knows how I feel about her. I think he's known since the day I first saw her. There are rare times when I think I'm alone with her then I'll turn and see him watching me, that spark of amusement in those sapphire eyes.

I have to leave again. ONI wants me to pull a defecting scientist from an rather unfriendly country. I can't say no. This is part what I do, part of what I am. With any luck I'll come back in one piece.

Standing in the nose, I closed the crash doors behind me. Just me and my lady. I moved toward the great windows, marveling at the view. I loved it here, the view from the windows is unmatched by anything I have ever seen. Being here in the nose, there was always a sense of optimism for me, the feeling that anything was possible. She did that do me. Even now, overshadowed by the upcoming mission, I was filled with a sense of wonder and awe. I leaned forward, resting one hand on the support struts and my right hand against the herculite windows. I could feel the pulse, and hum, the throb of power as Seaview plowed forward though the seas. My lady, my elegant gray queen.

I wasn’t sure how long he stood there, but I then suddenly I felt something touch my arm. He turned to see Chip, standing behind me with a slightly worried frown.

“You're awfully quite, Lee. You all right?” he asked me. I turned back to the window. We had already had our pre-mission discussion. He tells me to tell ONI where to stick it, I tell him I can't do that, it wouldn't be right. As always, we agree to disagree. I need him here, to keep Seaview safe for me. I need to know someone I trust is going to take care of my lady when I’m gone.

“Promise me you'll take care of her?” I said softly, drawing my hand away from the support strut.

“I always do, Lee. Why so morbid today?”

“Just thinking about Seaview, Chip. That's all.”

For My Lady

As performed by the Moody Blues

Written by Ray Thomas

From the album Seventh Sojourn

~<<>>~
My boat sails stormy seas
Battles oceans filled with tears
At last my port's in view
Now that I've discovered you

Oh I'd give my life so lightly
For my gentle lady
Give it freely and completely
To my lady

As life goes drifting by
Like a breeze she'll gently sigh
And slowly bow her head
Then you'll hear her softly cry.

Oh I'd give my life so lightly
For my gentle lady
Give it freely and completely
To my lady

Words that you say when we're alone
Though actions speak louder than words
But all I can say is I love you so
To drive away all my hurt

Oh I'd give my life so lightly
For my gentle lady
Give it freely and completely
To my lady

Set sail before the sun
Feel the warmth that's just begun
Share each and every dream
They belong to everyone.

Oh I'd give my life so lightly
For my gentle lady
Give it freely and completely
To my lady
